Cultural Stories

Cultural Stories is a programme that aims to promote the European culture and the national contribution and active participation in the European culture.

The Delegation of the European Union in cooperation with the EU InfoCentre started the monthly event “European Film Talks” where an award winning European movie will be shown. The selected movies will be shown for educational purposes and to prompt a debate about the art of film making, European cinema of the late 20th and early 21st century, European politics, migration processes and other topics covered by the film that the audience will see.

The first debate in the lecture series "Christian philosophical forum" was organized by the EU InfoCentre in cooperation with the Philosophical Society in the country. The purpose of this series is to set the forum as a dialogue platform consisted of discussions on various philosophical, theological, social, political, ethical and cultural issues.

The publishing house ANTOLOG in partnership with the Delegation of the European Union and the EU InfoCentre organised a discussion about the European literature among domestic and European authors. The main topic of the event was the European literature.

Within the sixteenth edition of the Week of the Italian Language in the World, the Italian embassy in Skopje in cooperation with the Delegation of the European Union organized a whole day event at the EU InfoCentre dedicated to Italian creativity, fashion and design.

The potential of the mosaic as a creative industry was the topic of the today’s discussion “In the World of Mosaic” organized by the “Dobredojde” Welcome Centre at the EU Info Centre in Skopje. The goal of the event was to promote the mosaic art and craft as a promising creative industry in the country.

How the writers reflect the present issues of Europe? This was the topic of the discussion organised by the Goten Publishing – Skopje at the EU Info Centre. The public event was staged in honour of the two writers, Tiit Alekseyev (Estonia), Goce Smilevski, who are winners of EU Prize for literature.

On the occasion of 9 May – the Europe Day, the Delegation of the European Union, the British Council and OSTEN are presenting the British artists from the OSTEN Museum of Drawings collection. The British National Collection of the OSTEN Museum of Drawings is consisting of 122 UK artists and about 200 works. Among the others, the collection includes works by Henry MOORE, Damien HIRST, David HOCKNEY and Francis BACON

As a part of the Cultural stories, the EU InfoCentre started a programme "Booking your mind" aiming at promotion of European values and European culture through interactive models of cultural production, forums and debates. Considering some of the anniversaries and jubilees in 2016, several European authors and books that have shaped European cultural history, created modern theories and ideologies, inspired art and social movements and still have a large influence in the socio-cultural context today, will be debated. Concept developer and host of the debates is Ana Jovkovska, journalist.

On 14 April (Thursday) the EU InfoCentre of the Delegation of the European Union organised lecture by Goran Stefanovski titled “Tintin in the Balkans - their clichés about us and our clichés about them”. The country’s leading playwright, screenwriter and essayist talked about cultural and socio-political stereotypes of the relationship between the Balkans and Europe.

The exhibition of artworks by contemporary European artists titled “The magic of the Blue Mountain” was opened on 15 February at the EU InfoCentre. “The magic of the Blue Mountain”, is envisaged as a serial of 3 small four-artists to six-artists exhibitions, aiming to introduce the audience with how a selection of renowned contemporary European artists perceive the rural features of the country. The artworks that are exhibited have been created during the Artist in Residence programme at Art Point - Gumno (v. Sloestica)

On 30 November, Monday, at 19:00 hrs., the exhibition of photographs “Moments in Europe” by the photographer Igor DANAJLOVSKI will be open in the EU InfoCentre. The exhibition, at which its author Danajlovski will welcome the guests, is organised within the Cultural stories series of events.

The Delegation of the European Union and the EU InfoCentre in close cooperation with the British Embassy, the Composers Association of Macedonia (SOKOM) and the prominent musicologist and member of SOKOM, Ms. Branka Kostic-Markovic, a partner and coordinator of the project, organised the second edition of the European Contemporary Composers project that was aiming at presenting the contemporary European composers to the public.

The first ever concert within the European Contemporary Composers programme was held Tuesday, 20 October, at Daut Pashin Amam in Skopje. It included pieces by these three composers performed by the music ensemble “Con Tempora”.

Starting from 21 May, a series of events named "Caravan of Debates - The Pulse of Society" will be held around the country. The Caravan of Debates is a platform for creating an open, inclusive, democratic and creative society through interactive models of cultural production and debates.

On 02 June 2015, the EU InfoCentre hosted the lecture “Empress Sisi of Austria – Legend and Reality”, by the Austrian historian Dr Lisa Fischer. The lecture, which was organised by the Austrian Embassy and the Delegation of the European Union, was part of the EU InfoCentre’s programme of events “Cultural Stories”.

On 12 May, Monday, the exhibition of sculptures and paintings by artists Saso Sazdovski and Pandora Apostolska Sazdovska was open at the EU InfoCentre. The exhibition, organised within the Cultural stories series of events, is also taking place as part of the 2014 Europe Day programme. The event, which was open by Professor Igor Jovanoski, Southeast European University, encompassed the exhibition of sculptures “Family” by Sasho Sazdovski , and paintings and an installation titled “Playground” by Pandora Apostolska Sazdovski.

From 23 – 29 September 2013, the Delegation of the European Union and the Ministry of Culture, in cooperation with the Dutch Embassy and the publishing houses – grantees of the EU’s Culture Programme organised a Book Fair of books translated as part of the EU Culture Programme 2007 – 2013 and the European Day of Languages, in the EU InfoCentre in Skopje.

The Book Fair was open with a press conference with H.E. Aivo Orav, Head of the Delegation of the European Union and Ms Elizabeta Kanceska-Milevska, Minister of Culture, as well as Ms Biljana Prentoska, National coordinator for the EU Culture programme.

On 9 April, Tuesday, at 16:00hrs, at the EU InfoCentre, a discussion “Into the Fairytale” – as a part of the Cultural stories programme a discussion between two children's writers Ulf Stark and Kiro Donev, together with children from Skopje elementary schools was organised. A moderator was the actress Maja LJUTKOV. During the discussion the hildren learned about authors' childhood, how they learned to read, how they decided to become children books writers, their favourite books, why it is important to read, etc.
